Start with what is on your mind
| How you feel | Try this | A question to begin with |
|---|---|---|
| Single and open to meeting someone | Three cards: needs, obstacle, next step | What kind of companionship do I want now? |
| Something you want to talk about | Three cards: feelings, needs, expression | Why does this matter to me, and how could I bring it up? |
| An ongoing connection | Five-card relationship spread | What do I enjoy about being together, and what has been tiring? |
Begin with your feelings and things you have noticed: who makes plans, how you respond to each other, what remains unsaid. You can explore your view of the other person; hearing theirs will take a conversation.

Two three-card love spreads
For singles: needs, obstacle, next step
- Needs: what kind of companionship would feel good now?
- Obstacle: what concern, habit or practical difficulty is getting in the way?
- Next step: what could you try, at a pace that suits you?
For a conversation: feelings, needs, expression
- Feelings: how do you feel about this issue?
- Needs: what matters underneath that feeling?
- Expression: how could you put it into words?
After a cancelled plan, for example, you might first notice disappointment, then realize that you need a little more notice. That gives you something specific to say: “If plans change, could you let me know earlier?” The three-card walkthrough can help you begin.
Five cards for a closer look at your relationship
| Position | Ask yourself |
|---|---|
| 1 · My state | What feelings am I bringing to this relationship? |
| 2 · My view of the other person | How do I see the way they relate to me? |
| 3 · Our interaction | What tends to happen when we are together? |
| 4 · Pressure and challenge | What has been making this feel tiring? |
| 5 · My next step | What could I say, do or take a pause from? |
With card 2, bring specific moments to mind. Have they kept an agreement, reached out first or responded to a request? Those details help connect your reading to the time you actually spend together.
The last card might suggest rest, some distance or saying something you have held back. Let the next step make room for your feelings too.
Draw five cards and read them together
- Think of one specific issue. Perhaps you have seen each other less, or you always arrange the plans. One issue gives you a place to begin.
- Shuffle and draw five cards. Place them in the numbered order. Upright-only readings are fine when you are starting.
- Spend a moment with each card. Notice what the image brings to mind, read its meaning and connect it to the question for that position.
- Look at the cards together. Where do your hopes meet the way you spend time together? Where is there a gap?
- Keep one thought. What feeling do you understand better? Is there something you would like to talk about?
A reading example: who makes the weekend plans?
Suppose you have been dating for a few months. You enjoy seeing each other, but you arranged the time and place for the last three weekends. It is beginning to feel tiring, and you worry that saying so will sound petty.
Your question could be “How can I talk about sharing the effort of making plans?” We have chosen these five upright cards to illustrate a reading.
| Position | Card | What it might bring to mind |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · My state | Nine of Cups | You enjoy being together and value the connection. You want it to keep going because it matters to you. |
| 2 · My view of them | Knight of Pentacles | They keep agreed dates, which feels dependable. Their pace is slower, and they rarely suggest plans first. |
| 3 · Our interaction | Six of Cups | Familiar places and comfortable habits make meetings easy. Who does the planning has also become an unspoken routine. |
| 4 · Pressure | Ten of Wands | Alongside the dates, you feel you are carrying the whole job of organizing them. |
| 5 · My next step | Queen of Swords | Say what matters to you and make a request the other person can respond to. |
Read together, the cards leave room for two feelings: you enjoy the relationship, and you are tired. The Nine and Six of Cups hold the pleasure of being together; the Ten of Wands brings attention to the effort you carry.
The Queen of Swords’ clarity can become an ordinary sentence: “I’ve arranged the last few dates, and I’d love you to plan one too. Could you choose the time and place next weekend?”
Perhaps they have become used to you organizing things, or perhaps they have been short on time. A conversation can tell you more. The next couple of dates can also show whether they are willing to share the effort.
Why can a reassuring card describe a challenge?
Something you cherish can still need a little work. The Lovers in the challenge position might bring up expectations about the future that you have never discussed.
A card becomes more specific when you bring it back to the relationship. The Three of Cups might suggest friends and gatherings; a court card can describe an attitude. Notice which actual moment it recalls, then read it beside the other cards.
With a reversal, consider whether a feeling has stayed unspoken or something has been difficult to express. Leave an unclear part for now and return after a conversation or a new experience.

Common questions about love spreads
What could I ask when I am thinking about an ex?
Explore what is in that hope: missing them, regret or something left unsaid. Getting back in touch depends on what both people want. If they have asked for no contact, respect that decision.
Can we do the spread together?
Yes, if you both want to. Share what the cards bring to mind and listen to each other’s reading. Sometimes the interesting part is discovering how differently you feel about the same thing.
What if anxiety makes me want to keep asking?
Put the cards aside for a while and do something that helps you feel settled. You could write the answer you most want and explore the need behind it. Reassurance may take time to find in a conversation, your relationship or your own daily life.
